About SSC

Sriperumbudur Sanskrit College A small Patashala with 12 students commenced teaching around the year 1870. This emerged as the Ubhaya Vedanta Vardhini alias Sriperumbudur Sanskrit College in 1890 with Sri Singam Chetty Ateendrooloo Chetty as the first President of the college committee. He graciously donated the entire amount for purchasing land and putting up an impressive structure to house the college.

Our story

To quote Sri Anna N. Subramanian former President, Vivekananda College, “The Sriperumbudur Sanskrit College which is aptly known as Ubhaya Vedanta Vardhini and which preserves and propogates our spiritual heritage through Sanskrit as well as Tamil is rendering inestimable service to the cause of our ancient culture. Even a little of such devoted service will save us from the onslaught of materialism and spirit of disunity which threatens the country today.”

The mission

In the year 1891-92 this institution was granted recognition by the Government and commenced conducting courses such as Vykarna Siromani and Nyaya Siromani. Subsequently the institution applied to the University of Madras for affiliation in the Siromani courses of the Oriental Titles Examination and obtained it. Thereby the colllege emerged as as a place for post siromani courses of study and research. The college has been recognised as a suitable institution for post graduate research in Nyaya. From 1922 a free boarding house for poor students was run.

The alumni of this college has won laurels in the Vidwat parishads held in Mysore, Pudukottah, Vanaparthi and Gadwal and the Veda Vedanta Vardhini Trilplicane. Several have secured places as pandits in schools and colleges and some have started sister institutions to propogate Ubhaya Vedanta. The college opened Vedam courses in 1971. In 1951 the college opened Tamil Vidwan couses. Towards the goal of spreading enlightenment in the light of our great traditions the college has now undertaken a programme for Sanskrit propogation to equip the next generation with the required foundation to be able to access the great scriptures of our land

Life History of the Founder

Sri Singam Chetty Ateendrooloo Chetty Garu

He was born in the year Dhanthu, on Ekadasai day in the month of magha, under the star poorvashadha at Srirangapatnam in the province of mysore. His father Vakulabharanam Chetty came down from Srirangapatnam and settled at George Town. He was employed as cash keeper at the female Orphan Asylum. The marriage of Sri SingamChetty was unique in itself. A gentlemen by the name of MumidyChetty Swami Chetty settled the marriage of his daughter to one Vysia boy and while he was been taken in procession before the marriage ,the creditors of the boy prevented the procession and took him to Civil jail. SwamyChetty became naturally very much dejected but decided to celebrate the marriage at the specified time. It was suggested to him that he should give his daughter to Sri AttendroolooChettyGaru and the marriage was celebrated at the specified Muhoortham.

After the death of his father Vakulabharanam Chetty, he became a cash keeper on a salary of Rs. 20/- a month. But after some time he left the job and decided to run a business and began to deal in yarn, salt, bullion and other materials and amassed a fortune. He had two children but both of them predeceased him. His brothers too did not have any issues. He was bringing up his sister’s sons but both of them died without children. He was averse to adoption and decided to convert his properties into a charitable trust. He set apart 4 lakhs of rupees worth of landed properties, G.P Notes etc. .,as an endowment. This venerable gentleman while alive made several presents in the shape of jewels and vahanams to temples, organized poor feeding and several other charities. Amongst the various charities Sanskrit education also received support. He allotted a sum of Rs.950/- for the Sanskrit college at Sriperumbudur to be paid every year. In almost all important places he had erected choultries for the use of srivaishnavas of the three classes. On or about the 28th June 1899, he appointed 9 trustees to administer his estate and the trustees are very much interested in improving the charities on all sides. They have contributed nearly Rs.1000/- for putting up a second storey in the premises of the college. The building itself was purchased and given for its use by singamchettyateendrooloochettyGaru during his life time.This venerable gentlemen attained paramapadam on Wednesday the 9th of August 1899,in the year vikari.
